About Santorini Volcano Protected Area

The Santorini Volcano Protected Area encompasses the volcanic island of Santorini and its surrounding geological formations in the South Aegean region of Greece. This protected area is renowned for its massive caldera, created by a volcanic eruption approximately 3,600 years ago, which shaped the crescent-shaped islands of Thira, Thirasia, and the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. The landscape offers a striking combination of steep cliffs, rugged lava fields, and natural hot springs. Santorini's volcano remains one of the most studied active volcanoes in the Mediterranean, characterized by fumaroles and occasional eruptive activity on Nea Kameni. The area’s unique ecology supports sparse yet resilient Mediterranean flora adapted to volcanic soil and arid conditions. Visitors can explore marked hiking trails leading to the volcano's crater rim, enjoy boat tours around the caldera, and visit the volcanic hot springs. The protected area also holds archaeological significance, with the nearby ancient Minoan city of Akrotiri, buried by volcanic ash during the Minoan eruption, offering a fascinating historical dimension. The combination of geological wonders, rich cultural history, and panoramic views of the Aegean Sea attracts scientists, hikers, photographers, and cultural tourists alike. Conservation efforts focus on preserving the island’s delicate ecosystems, volcanic features, and historical sites, all while managing tourism to minimize environmental impact. The volcanic protected area is accessible year-round, best visited in spring and autumn for mild weather and fewer crowds. Visitors are encouraged to respect natural and cultural resources to ensure the continued preservation of this extraordinary volcanic landscape.
